ATHLETIC DIRECTOR'S CORNER

As we begin the school year and the athletic contests start up again, it is important that we remember ‘student’ always comes first in student-athlete. Scholastic athletics helps prepare young students for the all-important skill of time management. Balancing practices, games, school work, family and a social life can be difficult. However, with proper focus and determination, it can be done!! Here are some helpful tips to use this school year.

  • Create lists
    • It sounds simple, but putting all your tasks to paper help graphically organize the important jobs that must get done.
  • Prioritize
    • Not all tasks are created equal. After creating a list of all your tasks, put them in order of importance. Your time is finite and precious. Make sure you spend it wisely on the tasks that are most important to your success.
  • Analyze and Allocate
    • Take time to analyze your task and create a timeline or calendar to mark when each task can be completed. Set aside the proper time and energy to accomplish your desired goal. Know what it takes to complete the task and how much time in order to be successful. Athletics is mostly done for the student-athlete, games and practices times are already pre-set for the student. However, homework, projects and other tasks need to be analyzed for the amount of time, energy and resources that need to be put into successful completion of it. Think about what it takes to complete the task and set up your calendar to with the allotted time for that task. This will help prevent unnecessary cramming for assignments.
  • Focus
    • Multitasking in this day and age is easier than ever. It is a great tool and something that helps us be efficient in our efforts. However, this is an old saying “if you attack everywhere, you attack nowhere”. When trying to manage your big tasks, focus on completing it before moving on to another task if possible. For those bigger tasks, make sure you break them down into smaller tasks and check them off after each one. These small successes help you feel accomplished and stay motivated.

Good luck this school year!!
